Facebook Detox

As of tomorrow the 1st of June I will be taking a 1 month Facebook detox.  I know a few people that have been doing this lately and I have decided to give it a go.  I was getting rather bored of it anyway.  Twitter is my network of choice for socialising at present so I think this should be relatively easy to do.

Having said that I know from the experiences of others that it's easier said than done.  How long could you go without Facebook?  And if you aren't a Facebook user then swap that for whatever Social Networking site you use or forum etc.

I saw someone write once something to the extent of:

Facebook - for not talking to people you already know
Twitter - for talking to people you don't know
Bebo - for kids to post crap
MySpace - for making a horrible profile that looks like something your cat threw up
Youtube - for filming things you cat really did throw up

Day 30 - Your Favourite Song At This Time Of Year

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

Well here we are the last day of the challenge and I have to say I enjoyed it even though it took a lot of effort and time.  As for today's challenge since today is the 30th of May and so close to June this time of year I would consider Summer, not in the sense of the Season literally but in the sense that this is the time of year that I would get summer holidays from school etc.

There are several songs that remind me of the Summer and several that are on my fluid list of favourites.  There is one classic cheesy song that stands out among all others for me though and that is 'Summer Of Love' by Steps.  So this will be the last post from this challenge if anyone has any ideas for more feel free to tweet me as usual the link is at the bottom of the post.

The final video:

Day 29 - A Song From Your Childhood

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

This song was released in my childhood and now reminds me of it.  The song is called Troy and is by SinĂ©ad O'Connor.  As usual though I prefer one of the more dance type remixes than the original.

The version I like is Troy - The Phoenix from the Flame [Schillers Xtended Remix] and comes on Disc 2 of the Album Deeper Shades of Euphoria Vol 1. [Amazon Link below the video]

Day 28 - A Song That Makes You Feel Guilty

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

Not long now we are coming to an end of this 30 day challenge.  Today's challenge was one that I took some time to think over and I finally found which song I should use.  At first I thought that I didn't have anything for this day but after some searching I came across a track that brought back some old memories and some old feelings of guilt so it was that which has inspired me to use it.

The track is called 'Chasing Cars' and is by Snow Patrol.  The reason this song inspires guilt is because a few years ago now I became quite enamoured with an impressionable guy.  This was his favourite song and he introduced it to me.  In time it grew on me as my feelings for him grew and I made the mistake of saying the lyrics of the song described my feelings perfectly that "those three words, are said too much, they're not enough" and he fell for me head over heels.  It didn't last though and when we ended things they ended with him a being a lot worse off than me emotionally.  We made amends int he end and we left on good terms but the song reminds me of that time and reminds me of him and of the guilt for how things had initially ended.

Day 27 - A Song That You Wish You Could Play

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

There are quite a few instruments I would love to learn how to play and there are even more songs I would like to learn to play on them.  However at a push there is one song and instrument pairing that I think are amazing and I am forever in awe.  I would love to be able to play like this.  The song is called 'To Love You More' and is sang by Celine Dion and the instrument is the Violin.

This video shows the song performed by Celine and the Violinist is Taro Hakase an incredible man whose talent I find astounding.

Day 26 - A Song That You Can Play On An Instrument

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

This one is tricky on account of the fact that I can't play any instruments apart from a tin whistle.  However Voice does count as an instrument and in that one slight technicality I have chosen a song I can actually sing.  When I was younger I was in the school choir.  It wasn't terribly exciting.  I sang many songs in that time the majority were hymns and I went to a Catholic school so the religious aspect played a massive part.

Of all the songs and hymns we sang I have chosen 'O Come All Ye Faithful'.  This video is the hymn being sang by the Kings College Choir:

Day 25 - A Song That Makes You Laugh

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

Well this is quite fitting after yesterday's sombre note.  This song is as random as it's lyrics. I first came across it in University by way of the same friend that introduced me to Dark Blue.  The song is another Christmas song but not in the conventional sense by any means.

The singer is called Kevin Wilson and the track is called Ho Ho fucking Ho.

Day 24 - A Song You Want Played At Your Funeral

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

This is a depressing one by all accounts but still let us make haste.   I live in Ireland.  At some point I hope to live outside Ireland again.  I would like to travel the world and find a place that I can settle down.  However no matter where I end up I do have one request.  I want my body taken home when I die.  No matter where I am I want my body returned to Ireland and I want to be buried here.  This country gave me life and it shall be my final resting place.

In fitting with that wish I have this song I would like played, 'Going Home' by Mary Fahl

Day 23 - A Song You Want Played At Your Wedding

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

I don't believe I will ever get married.  There are a number of reasons for this but let's imagine in some warped future that I will get married, then there are a few songs I would like at my wedding but in my experience the older songs go down better at weddings.  There is one track that you have to dance to and it is an almost unwritten law that it should be played at all major functions and that is the classic track by Queen, 'Don't Stop Me Now'

I went to see We Will Rock You in London and I loved it, it was amazing and when this song eventually played it was a moment of great release.  So here we are:

Day 22 - A Song You Listen To When Sad

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

This was a hard one as there are many songs I listen to when I am sad and which ones depend upon the reason for the sadness.  The song I have chosen to go with though is one that is reminiscent of Christmas since it accompanied a Christmas Carol the Movie.  The song is called 'What If' and is performed by the actress Kate Winslet.  Kate is not a singer and she expressed duly when the song was released that she did not want to be a singer she was happy being an actress and for that I think this song is so special because it is being performed by someone who is singing it for the music and not as a career path.

The song has once again poignant lyrics and in my mind they take me back to a time in my life when I came to a crossroads and I turned left, and often wonder what would have happened if I had turned right?  Just as the song lyrics surround a person as their subject so too do my memories but I am not giving a lot more away here as this is something very personal to me.  Here is the song:

Day 21 - A Song You Listen To When Happy

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

This song is a former Eurovision entry.  It did not win the year it was entered but I liked it.  I found it very uplifting and although it only came into my life a few years ago now it has become a favourite of mine within my library.  The lyrics are fun the melody is uplifting and this whole combination just makes me feel happy.  I tend to listen to this track more when I am already happy whereas the day 3 track that makes me happy is more uplifting, today's track is more sustaining.

The track is called 'The Highest Heights' and is by a group called 'The Lovebugs' and here it is:

Day 20 - A Song You Listen To When Angry

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

When I get really emotional I become very silent more so than usual to the point of practically being a mute.   When I get angry I either listen to pumping music and lift weights to work out and relieve the stress physically or I listen to really dark music and this is where the likes of Marilyn Manson come into play.  I have chosen one of his tracks.  I have much darker stuff than him but nothing that would really be suitable here.

The song I have chosen is one I can listen to when angry or not and for a while this song had deep meaning for me and still does.  The song is called Personal Jesus and here it is:

Day 19 - A Song From Your Favourite Album

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

As mentioned previously my concept of favouritism is fluid.  At the moment my favourite album is 'Confessions On A Dance Floor' by Madonna.  I got this album around the time I graduated from College and was preparing for University.  There are many songs on the album which I love and many I relate to and above all else it is the one album of Madonna's that is closer to my preferred style of Music than any other.

Although there are many tracks it didn't take much hesitation for me to pick one.  The track I have chosen is called 'Sorry' and in a contradiction to the title but in keeping with the lyrics, the reason I have chosen it is because I am not sorry for anything and if anything I don't want people to apologise because apologies are empty.

"please don't say forgive me, I've heard it all before and I can't take it anymore"

This lyric sums up my outlook on life right now, bit melancholy I know.

Day 18 - A Song You Wish You Heard On The Radio

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

This was literally the first track that came to mind simply because I believed it had been on the radio at some point which a lot of the music I listen to hasn't.  The track is 'Here I Am' by Bryan Adams.  I have a lot of Bryan Adams in my Media Library.  I quite like his style of music and his voice and I think the lyrics of the song are quite poignant as in keeping with my music with meaning theme that has ran through these posts.

This song was also I believe the title track to the movie 'Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron'.  I went looking to find out how well it did in the charts and found that it reached #5 in the UK charts but even more incredibly, it had never been played on the Radio, the song had not been given airplay.  So to have reached #5 in the charts with no airplay is an achievement in itself.

So for these reasons now even more so I believe it should have been played on the Radio [it has been played occasionally since then] it is an anthem and I am sure there are many people out there like me who can relate to this song:

Day 17 - A Song That You Hear On The Radio Often

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

The only Radio station I really listen to is BBC Radio 1.  Radio 1 plays chart music and a few shows mix in new music and some old classics.  There are few songs that hang around after they drop out of the charts.  There is a show however every weekday morning presented by Chris Moyles.  Every Friday for the last year or more now the McFly Song 'Star Girl' is played in a feature called McFlyday.  So that song is the only song that gets played regularly [once a week] making it the only song I can really say I hear often on the radio.

I happen to like it though so that fits perfectly so here it is:

Day 16 - A Song You Used To Love Now Hate

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

Hate is a very strong word, there's not a lot of Music I truly hate, but a lot I don't like.  This one particular track though is one that I once loved a lot but now don't care for much at all.  I remember when it first came out people liked it mainly for it's music video which was very provocative.  The track is called 'Call On Me' and is by an artist called Eric Prydz.

He has released some stuff since but nothing that was as successful and I do think that he was a one hit wonder even though he has had some new stuff out lately.

Here's the track there's not much really to say about it.

Day 15 - A Song That Best Describes You

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

Actually getting into the swing of things now this has turned out to be pretty fun.  A song that best describes me is one that was introduced to me by a close friend from Uni.  I instantly fell in love with this song, to the point that it became my ring-tone for my mobile [cell phone] five years ago, and has remained as my ring-tone even though I am now onto my third new phone since then, each time one of the first things I do is load up the song and make it my ring-tone.

The Band is called Jack's Mannequin and the song is called Dark Blue.  The one downside to the fact that it is my ring-tone is that every time I hear it now I have an impulse to look at my phone.  Anyway the reason I love this song and believe it describes me perfectly is because of the lyrics:

"If you've ever been alone in a crowded room, you'll know, you'll know"

On more than one occasion in my life I have been in that situation, alone in a crowded room, it's a very odd feeling.  I lived in London for 3 years while at University and in that time I traveled around London a lot and even with other people amid the crowd I would always feel alone.  It didn't matter how busy.

Day 14 - A Song No-one Would Expect You To Love

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

This is a hard one for a number of reasons not least that my music collection is incredibly varied there is everything in there from Marilyn Manson and Ozzy Osbourne to Madonna and Kylie Minogue.  Indeed by now you are surely thinking my Music taste is rather odd and that you wouldn't actually be surprised by anything I post now.

Of all the variance in my media library there is one genre in particular that is extremely lacked and that is Hip Hop.  Well that is what Windows Media Player likes to Label it.  This genre is completely out of my comfort zone and not one I venture into easily.  I'm not a gangsta type person and that is the stereotype I associate with that genre.  Sorry if that offends, stereotypes aren't always true I know.

The closest thing to this genre in my library is an album called Encore by Eminem and from it the track I have picked is called Never Enough - the lyrics, or whatever rappers call them are actually incredibly apt and sum up my feelings on many things not least the belief that you shouldn't try to please everybody because no matter what you do they'll want more and it will never be enough.  So with all due respect, fuck em all and please yourself first, then worry about others.

Day 13 - A Song That Is A Guilty Pleasure

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

This one I love but it is embarrassing and I am sure there are many people out there who like it but don't like to admit it - after all for it to have been number 2 in the charts a lot of you had to have bought it!

The song, like its namesake is a guilty pleasure through and through.  So here it is:

Fast Food Rockers - The Fast Food Song:

Day 12 - A Song From A Band You Hate

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

At first I thought this whole post would be a bit of an Oxymoron - how could you have music in your library of a band you hate?  If you hate them why do you have them?  Well I thought about it and came to realsie you can dislike a band in majority and only like one or two of their songs.  It took me a while to think of which band to name here as there are quite a few out there that I don't particularly like.

I have settled with the band Oasis - bit of an old one here, despite the fact I don't like them I have decided to include one of their songs that I think is iconic and most people would know.  In the words of Zane Lowe "Even if you don't like them you gotta respect what they are doing" or in this case what they did - emphasis on the past.  Anyway here is the track:  Oasis Wonderwall:

Day 11 - A Song From Your Favourite Band

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

When anything concerns favourites and favouritism in general my responses tend to be fairly fluid changing over time.  Related to another post a band I quite like right now is The Birthday Massacre and I would say of the moment they are my favourite band.  I found them a few weeks ago when I was randomly watching youtube videos, at the time it was related to the Tiffany video for "I Think We're Alone Now".  After browsing their videos my favourite track by them of the moment is 'Looking Glass'.

I like this track for a number of reasons, partly there feels like there's an influence of 'How Soon Is Now' the theme to Charmed and The Craft.  Also for the lyrics:

"a boyish notion, a false emotion, these words are spoken despite my love, a fool's devotion, is set in motion my eyes are open now"

The lyrics as a whole to this song really have meaning for me.  Music I can relate to even if new to me, jumps ahead of the others and straight into my inner circle.  Only a few weeks since I discovered TBM and I have already played their music exhaustively.  If you follow me on twitter you'll have probably seen my tweets of the videos etc.  Here is the video for Looking Glass [also the Album title]

Day 10 - A Song That Makes You Fall Asleep

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

The song I have chose isn't one that necessarily makes me feel sleepy or would make me fall asleep, instead it is a song I could fall asleep listening to - in that it is somewhat warm and comforting.  The artist is Jesse McCartney and the track is called 'Because You Live'.  I first discovered it while I was it University, and subsequently discovered Jesse's music.  He has a lot of Music I don't like, namely because his style isn't a style I would normally listen to.  I think he is a talented singer though if not everyone's cup of tea.

Also as a note this probably isn't his best track but it fits with the challenge for today.

Day 09 - A Song You Can Dance To

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

Now, this is my element! Aside from the Celine Dion collection, my Media Library is mainly populated by Dance, Trance, Electronica and Club Music.  There are so many to choose from but this one in particular sprang to mind, partly because I saw it by chance as I was looking through my library and partly because when I saw it I immediately stopped scrolling and thought of this track and I asked myself if I could dance to it and the answer was Yes.

This track is by Ultrabeat, and it is called Elysium (I Go Crazy).  I believe this mix is Ultrabeat vs Scott Brown if I am not mistaken.

Day 08 - A Song You Know All The Words

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

There are a few songs I know most of the words to, but not many I know all the words.  The song I have chosen is by Celine Dion - surprisingly she does not feature much in this series, despite her back catalogue taking up a large chunk of my media library.  The song I have chosen is "I'm Alive" - as many of you might think in reaction to this admission - I do know all of the words to more than one of her songs which won't surprise you much.  I have chosen this track in particular though as its lyrics make me feel happy and they also remind me of the aforementioned first crush who I first met around the same time I this album came out.

Day 07 - A Song That Reminds Me of An Event

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

I have taken 'a certain event' to mean an event in general, in this case Christmas.  In particular this song reminds me most of my first job working in Currys.  I worked there in the run up to Christmas and they had a CD with about 10 Christmas Songs on it that repeated over and over.  By the time Christmas that Year had been and gone I knew all the words to the song and I never wanted to hear it again.  Needless to say at Christmas time with the Music Channels a common feature in our house [my brother would watch them for hours] that song was played even more that year.

Every year now when I hear that song I know it's Christmas, it reminds me of Currys and actually makes me glad I am not working there anymore [it was hell you were on your feet all day - if you are too in your job I feel your pain].  In case you have never heard this song [I would not beleive you] here's the video:

The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York:

Day 06 - A Song That Reminds Me of Somewhere

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

Kelly Osbourne released her album, 'Sleeping In The Nothing' while I was in College.  The album had many songs but the first track 'One Word' reminds me of that time in my life more than any other.  It reminds me of my College, of sitting on the floor outside the classroom with my mates before class waiting for the lecturers to arrive as we were always early.  I even remember which floor it was [4th floor] my memories are that specific - granted it was only 7 years ago now.

It goes without saying with the exception of Bieber in day 2, all the songs I post are music tracks I actually like.

Day 05 - A Song That Reminds Me of Someone

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

When I was in College I had a crush on a guy I had known for some time.  We were close friends and we always got along.  We were in HMV one day and we were looking at Music.  I found an Album by a group called Lasgo called 'Some Things'.  I had heard them online on Yahoo Music which used to have a Radio service in the UK but they closed it a few years back.

He bought me the album that day, I think it was the first time anyone other than a member of my family had ever bought me anything.  I was 17 at the time so as you can tell I lived around charitable people (not!).  Anyway there are many tracks on the album that I like but I have picked this one because it reminds me most of him and the lyrics pretty much summed up my feelings for him - they still do to some extent.

Day 04 - A Song That Makes Me Sad

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

This song I think will make a lot of people feel sad, not just for its melancholy mood but also because it was for a long time the main backing track to the Cancer awareness advertisements on TV in the UK.  The song is called 'Fields of Gold' and was written by Sting I believe.  The version I link here is the version that was used in the adverts and there's not a lot I can say about it other than it makes me well up with tears even now.  It is performed by Eva Cssidy.

Day 03 - A Song That Makes Me Happy

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

There are quite a lot of songs out there that make me happy.  Music in general tends to make me happy that's the reason I listen to it.  Music and Food are my drugs of choice!

This particular song however has more significant meaning.  I was going to choose it as the song that best describes me but as fitting as this song would be I found another that was more-so.  This song is called 'I See Right Through To You' and it is by DJ Encore ft. Engeline.  It speaks volumes about my life but the melodies and the style of music really appeal to me and it can make me feel happy when I listen so I chose it.

Day 02 - My Least Favourite Song

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

I have to preface this one with a disclaimer - don't hate me.  I say this because people get very defensive whenever anyone mentions this artist.  For those in the UK you'll get the reference here, he is like Marmite - you either love him or hate him.  I don't love him, but I don't entirely hate him I just can't stand his music much.

My least favourite track is Baby by Justin Bieber.  I'm gonna cut this blog post short here.  There's not much else to say.

Day 01 - My Favourite Song

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Song Challenge

My Favourite song is a track called "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany*.  It was one of my favourite songs at various times throughout my life and I have always enjoyed the care-free nature of the lyrics.  The song has been covered a few times and none have lived up to the original except for one.  I have decided to post this cover by the Birthday Massacre instead of the Original*.

I am posting a cover because I think that to truly have a favourite song you have to appreciate the song and its lyrics not just a favourite singer or a favourite song by a singer but the song itself.

* I have since discovered Tiffany's version isn't the original; the song was first recorded in 1967 by Tommy James and The Shondells
