Day 31: Movies Worth Mentioning

So after the conclusion of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge I thought it would be good to mention some Movie I felt were worth mentioning but didn't really fall under any of the categories listed for the Month.

Firstly there are a few Hallmark Movies which I would like to mention:

The Last Leprechaun, this movie is one of my favourites because it indulges in the world of fantasy and also because I am Irish and Leprechauns are part of the folklore here. You probably won't find a trailer for this Movie though as it was a straight to video release that was also aired on the Hallmark channel.

There are a few others by Hallmark but I won't go into them as they all follow a similar vein of fantasy and legends or folklore.

There is another series of Movies these made by a Japanese Anime company called Studio Ghibli. I find these movies absolutely fantastic and I adore the animation style, it is more akin to storytelling than to what we would associate with cartoons. I'd like to include here, Howl's Moving Castle part of the Studio Ghibli Collection along with Spirited Away the first Ghibli Movie I ever saw and finally Kiki's Delivery Service

Here are two trailers, the first for Howl's Moving Castle and the Second for Spirited Away:

Day 30: The First Movie You Ever Saw At The Cinema

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

I have written a post about this experience elsewhere, I thought it was on this blog but alas I cannot seem to find it, oh well.  The first Movie I ever saw at the Cinema [after being stopped, detained by the Army, had the car practically disassembled and played in an army base while soldiers stood watch with loaded guns] was Mrs Doubtfire.

The Movie reminds me of that day, and I often look back on the day and think how little I thought of the whole experience and how insane the whole experience seems to people when I tell them about it.  It was in no way traumatic, it was "normal" to me.  I'll see if I can find that post if not I'll re-write and post it.

Day 29: A Movie From Your Childhood

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

I have the fondest memories for this Movie.  I loved it as a child and I can still watch it now and be entertained.  The Movie is: 'Back To The Future - Part 1'.  I loved this Movie and I loved the trilogy as a whole, in my opinion one of the few Movie Trilogies that actually worked.  I'm not usually a fan of Trilogies so many have turned good movies into train-wrecks.

Day 28: A Movie That Reminds You Of A Certain Time Of Year

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

This Movie is another from National Lampoon.  The Movie is 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation'.  Every year we watch this Movie coming up to Christmas it's a tradition in our house.  For a while at Christmas my brother would decorate the house to an extent that would put Clark to shame.  More than that my Aunt would decorate her house excessively at Christmas, although in her case she did it in the name of Charity so it was all for a good cause.

Aside from the fact that the Movie revolves around Christmas, my favourite time of year, there are many scenes in this movie that leave me in stitches every time, "let there be light", "it's a bit nipply out", "shitter was full" and "squirrel!" will suffice to identify the if you've seen it.

Day 27: A Movie That You Wish You Starred In

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

I was only 11 or 12 at the time but I had a crush on Ewan McGregor and I was so jealous of the kid that got to play Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars The Phantom Menace.  I wished I had starred in that Movie, still do to this day a bit.  I would have been so good in it, I would have made friends with Ewan and hung out with him when I got older then I would have turned him and we would have got married and lived on an Island and the fantasy goes on and on from there.  Of course I didn't know at the time he was married and I didn't have the Internet either so I couldn't even casually stalk / obsess over him - also no-one knew I was gay either.

Day 26: A Movie That You Could Enact From Memory

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

This was a difficult one to pick as I'm not sure there are many I could enact from Memory, but the one I would be most confident in or at least to the best of my ability would have to be a Movie that I have watched more times than I can count and again a Movie from my childhood. The Movie I chose is 'Casper' the original live-action movie with the tag-line "Seeing is believing". I loved this Movie and I also loved the Playstation Game that was released after it and it too remains to be one of my favourite Games which I am also confident I could recall most of the details from memory.

Day 25: A Movie That Makes You Laugh

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

"That bitch have one more face-lift she gonna be fartin' down her nose".
This Movie really is one of my favourites.  It stars one of my favourite comedians Chris Rock.  He's a would-be comic who dies chasing his dream except he wasn't meant to die and a Holy mess ensues.  I won't say too much cause I don't want to spoil the Movie.  My favourite character in this Movie and yet another one of my favourite comedians is Wanda portrayed by Wanda Sykes.  Just want to say right now Wanda Sykes is an absolute fucking legend! her thoughts on Gay Marriage, right on the money or her idea for a detachable vagina had me in stitches.

Back to the Movie: 'Down To Earth'

Day 24: A Movie That You Think No-one Should See

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

Now, I like Tom Hanks - and with that you know there's a 'but' coming and you know there's a Tom Hanks Movie coming.  I like his style of acting, I like his sincerity his likeability and has manner of speech.  I think personally, that Tom Hanks' strength in acting comes from his interactions with other characters.  I think even in a position where he should be hated as the bad guy he is still likeable.  However in this Movie: 'Cast Away' I believe that all of this falls on its face.  I believe for me the greatest let down with this Movie is the fact that the whole point of the Movie revolves around a single character's isolation.  I can only say that I hope during production he realised the Movie would be a pain and boring and that this drove him to a mini-breakdown and thus allowed him to accurately portray the mentality of a person who for all intents and purposes has 'lost it'.

I know my view isn't shared by critics given this Movie's award nominations and reviews and its score on IMDB but I still think that really no-one should see this Movie.

Day 23: A Movie That You Think Everyone Should See

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

This Movie choice might actually surprise a few people, not least anyone who believes I don't like 'good' movies and like crap.  This Movie is one that I think everyone should see.  It's a timeless classic, based on a story by Stephen King and a Movie that I saw when I was growing up and fell in love with it.  Of all the actors it starred perhaps the most tragic in life is the contrast between the innocence portrayed by River Phoenix in this Movie and the upsetting end that fate would eventually bestow upon him in life.

There are many Movies which contain, now-dead actors ad actresses but there is something about this Movie and the fact connections you form with the characters that for me binds you and makes you feel sad.  This is one of the few films I do believe you can only judge with its cultural significance in tow.

The Movie is of course, 'Stand By Me'

Day 22: A Movie That You Watch When You're Sad

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

I cried the first time I saw this Movie.  Every time I watch it I well up.  The story is a timeless one of friendship right through to the bitter sweet end.  The song that became the soundtrack reminds me of the Movie and every time I hear it I feel the same heaviness on my heart as when I watch this Movie.  I'm not sad right now, so I can't really write from the heart on this one so I'll just get on with it.  The Movie is: 'Beaches'

Here's a track from the soundtrack:

Day 21: A Movie That You Watch When You're Happy

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

There is something about fairy-tales ad fantasy, that as a child grips us, and as we grow loosens and falls away save for the few of us who grip it back and strive to keep those dreams and hopes alive inside us.  I watched a lot of Movies as a child and there's one that appealed to me and made me smile one that embellished the ideas that we could create our own worlds that we could be transported into.  There's a lot of symbolism in this Movie and in many respects it offers a plethora of opportunities both in entertainment and in study - particularly on the psychological aspects that don't appear to us as children but as we grow older we watch and think again.

The Movie is: 'The Neverending Story' and it captivated the minds of so many children seeing to them as it was, a story about venturing into other worlds and leaving reality and escaping.  To adults now though if you watch it again and think of the Psychological aspects, of the suggestion of mental instability in the main character, delusions of such magnitude they envelope his senses - amazing how age replaces innocence with cynicism no?

Day 20: A Movie That You Watch When You're Angry

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

When I'm angry I usually listen to angry Music or I'll watch a comedy Movie to cheer me up and bring my rage level down a notch or two.  So there's a few comedy films out there I like but I've chosen to go with a Movie that's underrated in my opinion.  Yes this Movie isn't the best in the world but I do think that many people who hate it are overcompensating a little.

The Movie is: 'Little Nicky'

Day 19: A Movie From Your Favourite Franchise

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

My choice of Franchise for this one was the James Bond Movie Franchise.  There have been many actors that have portrayed variation incarnations of the legend that is 007.  My Favourite Bond actor is Sean Connery.  However my favourite Bond film did not star Mr Connery instead it starred Roger Moore and while I don't believe he had as much charisma and charm as Sean I do still believe his performance was well played.  My Movie of choice also delved into the world of Sci-Fi a little which appealed to me greatly.

I have chosen James Bond: 'Moonraker' as my favourite Franchise Movie.

Day 18: A Movie That You Wish You Saw On The T.V.

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

Tim Burton is a wonderfully dark man who has a manner of crafting Noir colourless subject matters into vibrant mind catching displays while ever retaining that black and white polarity.  "All the colours of the rainbow in Black And White" is the best description I can use for his work in a nutshell.  Of the Movies he has worked on there are many worth mentioning but there is one in particular that I love not so much for the subject manner but for the story and the way it is told in the same mind catching fashion.

The Movie is: 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street' - I find this legend and the enactment of the story captivating in a manner of morbid fascination.  From my time living in London I did feel the history and the attitude of the city and not for one second did the thought that this legend was a lie cross my mind.  I can well and truly believe it happened and whats more it is this opinion that makes this movie so stomach churningly brilliant.  Johnny Depp has a flamboiant side to him and when I first heard it was he who was pinned for the part of Sweeney Todd I thought the Movie would be a disaster but I was happy to be wrong, his performance was amazing he nailed it so precisely it is scary to think that he is only acting.

I'd like this Movie to be shown more on T.V. because I think it is an excellent production but I suppose it is the Noir nature of the storyline that holds it back.  Still I suppose in the run-up to Hallowe'en it will probably get a look in somewhere.

Day 17: A Movie That You See Often on T.V.

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

While there are many movies on T.V. that seem to have gratuitous amounts of screen-time there aren't many that I am actually happy about being on so frequently.  This Movie however [Movie series actually] gets a decent amount of play and I think it deserves it.  This Movie is one Sci-fi Movie that has achieved a level of cult status where almost everyone you ask has seen it and for good reason.  This Movie mixes Thriller and Sci-Fi perfectly and portrays a story that actually holds up across several sequels and spin-offs, something which to this day not many Movies can claim to have achieved.  I know that I for one would go and buy another Movie if they were to make yet another sequel, I wouldn't even call it overdone, there are plot points and openings in the canon of this series' Universe That would allow sequels without the feeling of them being 'shoe-horned in'.

This Movie is called: 'Alien' and I have linked the Quadrilogy below which I would definitely recommend buying - if you haven't seen any of these Movies I would be in disbelief.

Day 16: A Movie That You Used To Love But Now You Hate

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

I used to like this Movie when I was a kid, now I just don't know what happened I just can't stand the movie.  It's called 'Babe' and no it's not the Baseball movie it's the Pig movie.  I really don't know what to say on this one just "meh".

Day 15: A Movie That Describes You

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

In more ways than one does this choice describe me.  I am clueless in Love, I buy into the enchanted by the fairytale romances of Hollywood, I have, rather I had, a little teeny weeny shopping problem - I once went out in a shirt and jeans and it got cold so I bought a jacket, just because it was cold - and if I was asked to do something I didn't know how to do the first thing I would probably do is use Google.  If you haven't guessed it by now the Movie that best describes me is: 'Confessions of a Shopaholic'.

Day 14: A Movie That No-one Would Expect You To Love

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

As with any post of this nature I have to add the disclaimer, that if you know me well enough nothing would surprise you in terms of your expectations of me.  Having said that I tried to think right outside the box and think of Movies that I loved but never spoke about.  I found them.  There are a series of Movies, made in the UK that hold somewhat of a charismatic embodiment of British Eccentricity, to anyone who has seen this series of Movies you will undoubtedly agree that the 'Carry On' series is something that sadly if you are not from the UK you probably won't appreciate as much as we.

From Wikipedia:

The Carry On films are a long-running series  of low-budget British comedy films, directed by Gerald Thomas and produced by Peter Rogers. They are an energetic mix of parody, farce, slapstick  and double entendres.

Twenty-nine original films and one compilation were made between 1958 and 1978 at Pinewood Studios, with an additional movie made in 1992.
I loved these Movies as a child and I have to say even today they make me smile, laugh and in one or two cases cry [in a good way though].  Of all the Movies in the series I didn't have to think twice about which I would pick: 'Carry On Cleo'.  Watch the trailer and if you are interested go and buy the Movie, I won't say much on this, there's not much to say, Carry On is a series that you can't really describe with justice you have to watch it to understand, you'll either love it or hate it - as is the way with many things British.

Day 13: A Movie That Is A Guilty Pleasure

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

This was a tricky one because if you know me and if you have read these posts over the 30 days you'll see that my taste in Movies is rather - odd - and that there are a fair few Movies that a lot of people might be embarrassed to admit they like.  I guess in this situation I should pick a Movie I like but that I would be slightly embarrassed to admit to a complete stranger.  So I've gone for: "St Trinian's", now if you haven't seen this Movie then you are missing out.  It's basically a tale of a young girl who feels disaffected and socially disconnected who finds comfort and acceptance when she eventually moves into a boarding school full of misfits and non-conformist anarchists, lead by a head teacher who is just as eccentric.

If my high school had been anything like St Trinian's I might actually have enjoyed my time there.

Day 12: A Movie From A Director You Hate

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

As I often say Hate is such a strong word but in some cases it can be justified.  I hate James Cameron.  I think he has no respect for Movies, I think he feels like he could take a dump on a plate and film it for 3 hours and slap a 3-D sticker on it and charge people a fortune to see it.  I didn't always feel this way about him, I actually like a lot of his earlier work, but I believe Titanic was the last Good Movie he was actually involved with.  However Titanic isn't the Movie I have chosen to go with, instead I have chosen to go with, for me and for many others, the Movie that brought him to the attention of the world: 'The Terminator' ["The" being canonical, even though most people drop it].

To me I wish Cameron would stop and reflect on his past, and I wish many others would too and look back at movies like this, that focused on story and plot development and background and brought something of an intrigue for the viewer, I hate the preoccupation with special effects now where film studios seek to make CGI movies with as close to real life imagery as they can - what's wrong with using ACTUAL real life imagery???

Day 11: A Movie From Your Favourite Director

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

Ever since I was a Kid I have always loved Steven Spielberg and the Movies he Directs. There is something of a childlike innocence that he seems to capture in so many of his works. The first Movie that I ever actually paid attention to whom it had been directed by was Jurassic Park. I don't know what it was exactly as I was only 5 years old when the Movie first came out, but it was after seeing this Movie that I started learning the names of Directors and the ones that I liked. Of all the Movies I had seen at such an age Spielberg was my favourite and to this day I follow his work with anticipation. You'll find two or three Movies in these 30 days in which he was either Director or Producer

Day 10: A Movie That Makes You Fall Asleep

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

Let me precede this with an admission that besides how much I like or dislike a Movie I will sit through to the end of the Movie and say "well that was crap" rather than get up and walk out.  This Movie however was incredibly boring and there were moments when I thought of getting up and leaving, however true to my word I sat it out, despite doing so being less pleasurable than a trip to the Dentist.  Not even the presence of Brad Pitt made this Movie any more bearable.  It is the only Movie on this list that I don't actually like.  It's called 'Babel', and for once I don't actually recommend you see this Movie.

Day 09: A Movie That A Friend Introduced You To

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

Before University I was quite closeted about my sexuality. I had come out to my family before I left but it wasn't until at University that I really explored my Gay side. That wasn't just in a sexual way it was also in a cultural way and it was while at University that I saw a long list of Gay themed Movies. From, Trick, Dog Tags, Redwoods, The Trip, Clapham Junction, Shortbus, Get Real and Shelter to name a few. The first Gay Interest Movie that I was ever introduced to was called 'Beautiful Thing' and was set in Bermondsey in London. It was I believe a Channel 4 production and I think it aired on Television a few times although I never actually saw it on TV. The Movie reminds me of the person who introduced it to me and it reminds me of the feelings I had and in some ways the feelings I still have for him.

Day 08: A Movie That Stars Your Favourite Actor

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

My favourite Actor, or rather my favourite Actress is Meg Ryan.  The first movie I saw with her in it was this movie: 'You've Got Mail'.  I love this Movie for so many reasons but the top 3 are that as a child growing up I loved all things to do with computers and I had always believed that if I was going to meet someone it would probably be through the Internet - since I knew I was gay and thought that I was "the only gay in the village" so to speak.  I do love the notion, the idea of meeting someone online and falling in love with their personality rather than what they look like, but truth be told in reality, you want to know.  You want to know what they look like from the moment you first start chatting.  I do believe you can fall in love with anyone though, regardless of looks but the Internet, especially online dating sites bring out the side of us that as it is said decides "within the first 3 seconds if we want to have sex with them".

Still this Movie is a veritable chick-flick and for that I put all the reality aside and just indulge in the fantasy of it all.

Day 07: A Movie That Reminds You Of A Certain Event

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

There are certain Movie franchises and series that I like to pay attention to, one in particular is the National Lampoon's Series of Movies.  There have been many and one or two will appear on this list.  The first appearance is this movie: 'National Lampoon's Van Wilder' which is a movie I first saw about a year before I went to College.  Now my time at College was nothing like what Van experienced but my time at University came surprisingly close.  I saw and did things that I never would have imagine I would do and in many ways this movie reminds me of my time there.  I'll probably elaborate on this further in future blog posts but for now, back to the Movie.

Day 06: A Movie That Reminds You Of Somewhere

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

This Movie reminds me of the first house I ever lived in. Partially because that's where I lived when I first saw it and partially because I remember the layout the rooms and how it was decorated and the room which most of the Movie centres around had both the same layout as in this Movie and also had a wooden cupboard of a similar style. The Movie is called "The Indian in the Cupboard" and was yet another magical themed Movie from my childhood. This one about a magical cupboard in which a child could lock toys and once opened again the toys would come to life.

Day 05: A Movie That Reminds You Of Someone

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

I'm a fan of the Harry Potter Movie series, for a number of reasons but the biggest reason is that it plays to my childhood fantasies and for most people around my age they grew up with Harry Potter that alone creates a link that lead the publishers when publishing the final book to launch a support line along-side the release of the book in anticipation of the many a distraught child who needed one of the most pivotal plot points explained to them - I'm talking of course of the scenes in which Voldermort kills Harry and Harry dies before meeting the deceased Dumbledore and returning. I remember when the support line was announced before the release of the book people wondered what it was for many assumed it was because the series ended but many more read the spoilers for the books and the infamous words "Harry Dies" lead so many people to buy the last book to actually see if it was true.

Day 04: A Movie That Makes You Sad

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

You are never too old for a Disney Movie; and it's a Disney Movie that I chose here, there are quite a few out there and the first one that comes to most people's minds is Bambi but the first one that comes to my mind is actually the Lion King - specifically the scene where Simba's Father dies in the stampede. This Movie always made me cry at that part when I was younger and I actually used to fast forward through the scene.

Day 03: A Movie That Makes You Happy

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

There are quite a few Happy Movies in my collection but there's one that comes to mind when I thought of this and it's called Slumdog Millionaire. Despite the setting of the movie being in the slums of India its message isn't lost and the hope it portrays does provide an overall uplifting viewing experience. I loved the score to this Movie too and I got the OST in my Media Library too. There's one other thing this Movie represents to me and that is originality. If you look at Hollywood and look at Bollywood and compare the two, the latter is more original and in my view more entertaining than the former. Hollywood did produce some great Movies - truly great, but as of late every movie seems to be remake this remade that, sequel to this prequel to that. I think Bollywood is definitely leading the way in the Film Industry.

Day 02: Your Least Favourite Movie

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

I said in my notes before that this Movie should be one that is your least favourite but still a Movie that you like and I have taken that into consideration when choosing which Movie I would pick.  I chose to pick 'Wild Wild West', in my opinions one of the worst Movies Will Smith ever chose to act in.  Will Smith on the other hand is one of my favourite actors and his very presence in this movie is about the only thing that motivates me to watch it.

Day 01: Your Favourite Movie

This post is part of a series of posts in The 30 Day Movie Challenge

I'm going to list two movies here.  Two, because for the first, my favourite movie, it could be argued that it's not actually a movie.  This is due to the fact that it's 9 hours long and had to be split up into 5 sections which were then packaged as a TV Mini-series.  This Movie is called The 10th Kingdom and was made by Warner Home Video and Hallmark.

Here's the trailer:

I chose this Movie because it is one I watched when I was much younger and we all love fairytales this Movie did more than rekindle that love but expanded upon those stories in a way that didn't ruin their original beauty.

Here's the IMDB entry:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0207275/

The alternative option is for those sticklers who insist I choose a 'real' Movie that can't be argued.  So for them my other choice is 十面埋伏 (Miàn Mái Fú) aka "House of Flying Daggers"

Here's the trailer:

I chose this Movie as it was one of the first Movies I ever bought myself with my own money, the others being movies I watched on TV, Online or that friends or family had bought.  It was also one of the first non-English language audio Movies that I had ever watched and it was surprisingly not that hard to follow with subtitles.  I have watched this movie dozens of times and every time I fall in love with it.  It is for me first and foremost a love story, the martial arts aspects come second.  Having said that the Movie is visually stunning and there are various choreographed fight scenes that for a long time both inspired me to want to learn and taunted me in their mastery.
